Diversity dimensions and their intersections are a natural part of our everyday realities. Taking intersectional aspects into account is particularly relevant to life in medicine, as they also influence health, illness and care. Only with medical research that takes intersectional dimensions into account and medical care that implements them can we guarantee the best healthcare for all.
About the person
After graduating from high school, I studied human medicine in Jena. As a native of Cologne, I returned to Cologne for the so-called practical year, where I worked in various clinics in Cologne. In Cologne, I also completed my doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Elke Kalbe and the then visiting gender professor Dr. Amma Yeboah on the gender competencies of medical students. After a medical internship and a Master's degree in Gender Studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, I started working as a research assistant in the Gender-Sensitive Medicine Department of the OWL Medical Faculty in Bielefeld.
Research interests
Through my private interest in feminist literature, I came across the gender-related gap that existed in my studies of human medicine. Since then - moved by this personal experience and a lack of understanding of the striking inequality of care - my research has focused mainly on the teaching of gender aspects and skills in medical education. In addition to basic theoretical work, this also includes teaching research and the development of teaching formats in the field of gender-sensitive medicine.
Another research interest is the experience of discrimination in medical studies. Here we investigate whether and to what extent the experience and co-experience of discrimination takes place in medical studies and what possible solution strategies exist for more discrimination-sensitive medical studies.
Project
And through my personal embodiment as an interdisciplinary scientist in the field of medicine and gender studies, I know about the enrichment, but also the challenge of interdisciplinary work in different subject cultures.
Therefore, as an IMPACT Fellow for the Faculty of Medicine, I am pleased to promote and raise awareness of intersectional gender perspectives across disciplines and to point out possible bridges.
