Training and Consultation

Researchers at all academic qualification levels can be specifically informed and qualified for the integration of intersectional gender perspectives through our IMPACT training and advisory services. Elementary theoretical and methodological approaches are taught and consolidated during the doctorate and early stages of an academic career. Qualification at this stage creates the prerequisites for acquiring this expertise in order to integrate it into future research processes. The qualification units in structured doctoral training and in (peer) mentoring processes are therefore predestined for the integration of learning units on the integration of gender perspectives in research questions and analysis methods. The topic is offered in target group-specific seminar and workshop programs, which are published in the continuing education program via the Albertus Magnus Center (AMC) of the UoC.

Research funding & regulations

1 German Research Foundation (DFG): Relevance of gender and diversity in research

"In order to improve the quality of research and to avoid 'blind spots', the DFG suggests that gender and/or other diversity dimensions should also be given appropriate consideration in research content."

The consideration of gender and other diversity dimensions can have a concrete impact on the planning, implementation and results of a research project. Therefore, reflection on gender and diversity should always be part of the preparation of a research project and - where relevant - be addressed in the application.

For proposals from all disciplines, the DFG recommends reflecting on whether gender and diversity are relevant in research content or methods. This is not integrated in a separate chapter of the proposal, but is taken into account in the research design and/or the research questions. The Research Advisory Service generally recommends making reference even if gender and diversity are not relevant, as the review will take into account whether reflection has taken place. Reflection can also be made visible through literature references. UoC IMPACT: is happy to support you in your application phase with tailored advice.

Please note: These guidelines are not to be confused with the DFG's research-oriented equality and diversity standards for the "realization of equal opportunities for all people in science and research - also intersectionally". Advice on this is provided at the UoC by Gender & Diversity Consulting: Equal Opportunities in DFG Funding Procedures (Equal Opportunities Unit/D7) Sandra Staudenrausch.

2nd EU: Gender dimensions in research & innovation

The EU also distinguishes between the promotion of gender equality and gender dimensions in research. "Gender" is relevant at the following points in the Horizon Europe research funding program:

  1. Prerequisite for participation : Gender equity plan
  2. Ranking criterion: Balanced teams (gender balance)
  3. Evaluation element: Gender dimensions in research & innovation

The Contact Point Women in EU Research provides advice and training in this area:

The question of whether gender and diversity are relevant in one's own research must be separated from the DFG's equal opportunities measures. Unlike the equal opportunities measures, this does not relate to a structural and personnel level, but to the content of the research project. In order to provide tailored advice on how researchers can identify and describe intersectional gender aspects in their research, IMPACT is developing a support service for third-party funding proposals together with the Gender Consulting department of the Research Management division.
